Dermot O’Leary reveals he was forced to have ‘very frank’ chat with This Morning’s Alison Hammond

‘We both did something the other didn’t like’: Dermot O’Leary reveals he was forced to have ‘very frank’ chat with This Morning’s Alison Hammond after ‘awkward on-air moment’

Dermot O’Leary has revealed he and Alison Hammond were forced to have a ‘very frank’ chat following an ‘awkward on-air moment’ that took place shortly after they took over This Morning’s Friday slot as co-hosts in January.

Speaking in a new interview, doting father Dermot, 48, explained that he and Alison, 46, ‘were thrown together with no time to prepare,’ with Dermot saying: ‘We literally met for the first time in 15 years or so and that morning we presented two-and-a-half hours of live television together.’

Adding that he and Alison ‘both did something that the other didn’t like’ live on air, Dermot said he and his co-presenter were forced to hash things out.

Speaking to The Sun in a new interview, he explained: ‘We both did something that the other didn’t like – nothing major – but after it happened we looked at each other, and I said: ”You didn’t like it when I did that, did you?”

‘And she said no, she didn’t. And I said: ”OK, well I didn’t like it when you did that thing”.’

He added: ‘And we both laughed, because now we knew. The most important thing is to find out what annoys the other and make sure you don’t do it again.’

Dermot added that he now sees Alison ‘as a sister’ and the pair now ‘have each other’s backs’.

The veteran TV host also noted that now he and Alison ‘know each other’s beats and nuances’ and that their co-hosting gig ‘feels really natural’.

ITV announced last year that Dermot and Alison would be replacing Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford on This Morning’s Friday slot.

Eamonn and Ruth, who presented the Friday morning slot for 14 years, now host the ITV show from Monday to Thursday during the schools’ summer holiday.

Alison and Dermot’s first show as permanent hosts saw blunders including grilling Graham Norton about his deceased dog, and mistakenly asking Fay Ripley about her two sons, only for the actress to clarify she has a son and daughter.

Eamonn and Ruth appeared on screen for their last show in December, during which he made a dig about bosses ‘getting rid’ of them during a chat about discounted trees, before the pair both grew emotional while saying goodbye.

During their sign off, Eamonn said: ‘You won’t be watching us anymore on a Friday, Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary will be here on Fridays here on in.

‘Please we would ask you to be as nice and lovely to them, friends of ours as they are, we’re very close to Alison and she has been to us for the past 15 years.

‘We appreciate all of the love you have sent to us today, we send it all back to you, have a very merry Christmas, it’s been lovely having you and I think we will see everybody again.’

Ruth added: ‘We will see everybody again in February, you’ve haven’t got rid of us, we’re back for the half term. So it’s a tricky year for everybody and we hope we helped you a little bit and thank you, have a merry Christmas see you in February’.
